Bailiff says: Blow-back rig
On a busy day-ticket water the fish have seen every bottom bait going and learn to blow them out, so the rig ring on the shank lets the hook keep working even when they eject the bait. It gives you a far better hook-hold than a standard hair on these switched-on fish.
Tweaks
- Size 6 wide gape hook
- Hooklink around 8 inches of coated braid
- Fish a wafter to balance the hookbait for easier pickup
Blow-back rig
A hair rig with a rig ring on the shank so the bait can be blown back without ejecting the hook.

Rig rings, 3mm
Coated braid hooklink, 20lb
Shrink tube
Size 8 swivel
Lead clip and tail rubber

How to tie it
- Tie the hair loop, slide a rig ring onto the hooklink, then pass the hair through the ring.
- Thread the hook and knotless-knot it with the ring trapped on the shank opposite the barb.
- Steam a kicker on the eye.
- Loop to a swivel on a lead clip; 3oz flat pear.
