The helicopter setup is the go-to for distance because the rotating hooklink resists tangling in flight and the streamlined lead-first delivery flies true. It also sits nicely on top of silt or weed with a short hooklink, so your presentation stays clean wherever it lands at range.
Tweaks
- Keep the hooklink short at 4-6 inches
- Use a heavier 3-4oz lead for maximum distance
- Set beads snug but not locked to allow rotation
Helicopter rig
The hooklink rotates around the leader above the lead. Casts well, resists tangles, and can be fished on top of weed.

How to tie it
- Tie the lead to the end of the leader.
- Slide the bottom bead, then the hooklink swivel, then the top bead onto the leader.
- Set the top bead to allow the hooklink to fly up the leader on the cast and sit above any weed.
- Tie a short hair rig, 4 to 6 inches, to the swivel.
